Indian millionaire weddings key niche

The Indian wedding business could bring in 30-40 billion baht to Thailand, says Satish Sehgal, president of the India Thai Business Association.

"Indians are interested in holding weddings in Thailand. Bringing in millionaires from India could result in 30 billion baht in additional revenue from this industry per year," said Mr Sehgal.

He said each millionaire coming to Thailand as a wedding host brings 500 people and stays in Thailand for around seven days. Each party spends between 100 million and 150 million baht per stay.

"This year's target is 30-40 parties, which is not enough," said Mr Sehgal. The aim is for 200 to 300 nationwide.

"Holding overseas weddings is a fashion, and it takes only three to four hours to travel from India to Thailand. Our five-star hotels are twice as cheap as Indian hotels, with even more facilities and activities for the whole family," said Mr Sehgal.

Some Indians go to Malaysia or Singapore, but Thailand is the top destination for overseas weddings, he said.

India has the most dollar billionaires in Asia, with 33, and thousands of millionaires, he said.

In addition to weddings, Mr Sehgal also deals with several types of investment, and he pointed out Thailand has a positive image in Indian eyes. The only problem is that the Map Ta Phut legal impasse has caused a decrease in investor confidence, he said.

"Investors have asked about Map Ta Phut but we have been telling them it is something that affects the public and the government is doing all they can to solve the problem. We also want factories to give increasing importance to corporate social responsibility," added Mr Sehgal.

Creative Ways to Propose

Here are some creative ways to propose marriage

1. Go crazy: propose to her at Halloween while being dressed up as a clown
or some other extravagant character.

2. Extreme sport: propose to her at the top of a mountain in a skiing resort. Propose to her a split second before you two ski down. When you actually go down the hill it would be as an engaged couple and the adrenaline would not be just from speeding down the mountain!

3. Complex productions are usually a creative way to propose marriage: go to the cinema to see a movie. Arrange in advance that at the end, a large slide saying 'Will you marry me?' with your names will appear in front of the whole audience. The applause at the end of the movie will be something special this time.

4. More extreme sport: go hiking, biking, rafting or scuba diving: anything will do. Your marriage proposal will be the climax of a thrilling day.
